As seen in a detailed photo, the new patch is similar to gold tabs used by Nike in recent years for other teams. Constructed from a textured, gold-hued fabric reminiscent of canvas, the rectangular patch features the stylized championsship trophy logo. Within the logo, the number '1' is prominently displayed, symbolizing the franchise's first NBA title as the Oklahoma City Thunder. The design is framed by a stitched border, giving it a premium, handcrafted appearance.
Seattle SuperSonics History:
While this patch celebrates the team's first title in Oklahoma City, it also highlights a unique aspect of the franchise's history. The Thunder organization owns the full history of the Seattle SuperSonics, which includes the 1979 NBA Championship. Had the Thunder chosen to acknowledge and celebrate this part of their lineage, the franchise could have technically worn a championship patch since their inaugural season in 2008. However, the team has kept the Sonics' history—including the retired numbers and the 1979 championship banner—separate from its identity in Oklahoma City. This new patch, celebrating a victory earned solely as the Thunder, reinforces that distinction.
